Temple University part-time professor, Debra Leigh Scott, co-produced a documentary called Junct: The Trashing of Higher Ed. in America, calling adjuncts “the invisible people” on college campuses.  The documentary was completed in 2012 but has not yet been released.  The Hofstra AAUP will announce its release in this section of the website as soon as word is out.

How many hours do adjuncts really work?

Posted on: May 10th, 2013 by Taylor Fontes No Comments

Steven M. Bloom of the American Council on Education proposes two methods of calculating adjuncts’ [real] hours determine eligibility for healthcare under the new Affordable Health Care Law.  The law stipulates that employers with 50+ employees must provide health care for anyone working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

The proposals are as follows:

1.     1) Use percentage of full-time course load, and the other would apply

2.     2) Use a ratio of outside-the-classroom hours to “face time” in the classroom.

Because each university is diverse and distinct, Mr. Bloom urges adjuncts to devise a ration that best suits them.  The Hofstra AAUP is establishing an Adjunct Advisory Committee whose first charge will be to brainstorm a calculation that applies to the majority of adjuncts on our campus.  If you are interested in being a member of this committee, please contact Taylor Fontes at by no later than June 1st.
